Program Description:

Large-scale events such as marathons are often susceptible to variables outside of the organizer’s control. This presentation will share some of the ways in which the Grandma’s Marathon team prepares to be adaptable and when things don’t go according to plan.

Speaker(s) Bios:

Shane Bauer joined the Grandma’s Marathon team in 2015 as Executive Director. Previously, Bauer was a full-time member of Grandma’s Marathon staff from 2001 to 2007 as Promotion and Design Director. He then launched his own company, Laughingstock Design and went on to found and direct Twin Ports Bridge Festival before returning to Grandma’s Marathon.

Greg Haapala joined the Grandma’s Marathon team as Race Director in 2016. Previously he spent five years with Twin Cities In Motion, the nonprofit organizer of the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon, serving as Participant Services & Events Manager. Haapala began his career in collegiate athletics at the University of Detroit Mercy where his duties included event operations, sales and fan experience.

Bauer and Haapala participate on behalf of Grandma’s Marathon in the NCS4 Marathon & Running Events Safety & Security Summit, which develops industry best practices on safety, security and contingency planning.
