Message from the Chapter President

Dear Members,

It’s a great time to be a project manager. The profession continues to grow and project professionals continue to master new skills and set global standards for good business practices that enhance a company’s portfolio and balance sheet. In June, Fox Business Online named the Project Management Professional (PMP®) one of the seven highest-paying IT certifications.

Unemployment in the U.S. is currently only 4.9%, while in Minnesota it is an amazing 3.7%, the lowest numbers in nearly a decade. A shortage of workers means that project professionals have more options available when contemplating a change in job status. Take full advantage of your PMI-MN membership by using our job board. As a PMI-MN member, you can log in to the PMI-MN.org website to access the members-only area, where you will find job openings for Agile Scrum Masters, PMO Managers, Schedulers, Business Analysts, and more. Job seekers should also visit the Sponsors pages on our website to view local companies with a big presence in project management who partner with us. From employers to consulting firms to educators, it’s a great place for determining who is hiring and how your skills stack up against market demands. As you refine your job search, check out the 2015 Project Management Salary Survey at PMI.org and you will see that having a PMP® certification can add 20% to your value.

OK, you know your value, you know where the jobs are, now how do you close the deal? Through active networking with local project professionals. Recent studies show that more than 80% of jobs are landed through personal connections. With thousands of applications crossing hiring managers' desks each year, a personal recommendation gets you to the top of the pile. Join our PMI-MN LinkedIn group to make professional connections. Attend one of our free career networking events each month and start up a conversation with someone new. They just might help you land your dream job. This fall’s biggest networking event will happen on September 15, as more than 600 project professionals and local company representatives gather for the PDD Symposium Day at St Paul RiverCentre. Practice your networking skills at this great event. I will see you there.

PDD - The Other Great Get Together!

OK, it’s not the State Fair, where you can get virtually anything on a stick. PMI Minnesota’s Professional Development Days (PDD) is our biggest event of the year – so big we host it at the RiverCentre convention center and it takes 4 days (Sep 12-15) to take it all in! PDD is one of the best venues to meet fellow professionals, industry leaders, and tap into the latest thoughts on managing projects (from teams to enterprise). Like the other great get-together, there is lots to see and experience, the food is pretty good, lots to learn, and it’s a chance to get out of the space you’re in. Use the PDUs you’ll gather for existing certificate accreditation, or work on picking up a new one.

We have some new things to do as well. Michelle Maas has been working on a “meet the speakers” social hour. Even if you are not attending PDD, we are making the evening available to chapter members as well. If you are interested, just send an email to our administrative office and list “PDD Social Hour” in the subject line.

This year’s PDD introduces a new certificate training option. Over the years we pioneered our own PMP® (Project Management Professional) and CAPM® (Certified Associate Project Manager) preparation classes. PMI now has eight certification / accreditation programs. Your Minnesota chapter is adding local training programs for the various certificates. Several years ago we added an Agile Community of Practice, followed by PMI-ACP® certificate training.  PDD 2016 (as in previous years) will offer multiple Agile sessions.

This year we are pleased to announce our partnership with Watermark Learning to provide training towards the PMI-PBA certification. Watermark Learning has provided top-quality, results-oriented training in both project management and business analysis for over 20 years. As PMI volunteers, Watermark Learning principals Elizabeth Larson and Richard Larson contributed to both the PMBOK® and the BABOK® Guides. Combining multidisciplinary expertise and longstanding experience, we believe this course will help you achieve your certification goals in this area of expertise!

Lots to do, lots to see and a great group of people to do it with! What more could you ask for? Check out the possibilities and register!

Upcoming PMI-MN Seminar from a World Famous Speaker - Traci Duez

Today…You Can’t Manage if You Don’t Lead

Perhaps there was a time when the work of the manager and that of the
leader could be separated. As project managers in the 21st century, this is no longer enough.
In today’s economy, value comes increasingly from the knowledge of people, and where workers are no longer undifferentiated cogs in a machine. People look to their managers, not just to assign them a task, but to define for them a purpose.
And managers must organize workers, not just to maximize efficiency, but to
nurture skills, develop talent, and inspire results.

In this presentation, you will learn how to develop from a Head-First Manager into a Heart-First Leader.

BOTH are necessary for your success. You will discover:
· The difference between your “heart” and your “brain”
· How your brain limits your perspectives and your heart expands them
· That leadership traits can be learned by understanding value
· How axiology can increase your leadership abilities
· That your “thinking” STRENGTHS are the key to your success
· How to shift from a head-first manager to a heart-first leader

Volunter of the Month - Brian Cohn

Brian took the lead this year as "Chair pro tem" for the MarComm team. His "day job" was consuming a large amount of his time, and part of that was that it required him to travel extensively. Still he pitched in and put in a lot of extra hours to administer and manage the team, attend meetings and report to Operations. He was covering a lot of bases and from what we've seen, he has done an exemplary job. While he has since turned the reins over to the able hands of Rico Mace (Chair), he continues to put in a lot of time covering a lot of bases.

PMI-MN would like to thank Brian for his time and dedication.
Congratulations Brian!!!
