Message from the Chapter President

Dear Members,

Some days we are so focused on our career advancement, deadlines and daily commitments-including kids, pets, chores and everything else that we have to squeeze into each day- that we forget about setting aside time for socializing. That’s right, you need some downtime. The Minnesota Chapter knows that we all need a chance to escape the daily grind, and we are committed to bringing fun to our events, as well as giving you an opportunity to share PMI with your friends, family and colleagues. Each year we sponsor multiple events that are not centered on PDUs. This summer and fall you can socialize and relax at three free events. Did I mention food and beverages provided? On July 16 we host our annual summer event to celebrate the contributions of volunteers and members, a cruise on the Mississippi River. This year we are expecting over 100 members and their guests to participate. July 30 and August 6 members, family and friends can give back to the community through our team participation in the annual Metro Paint-A-Thon. We provide all of the materials; you bring a willingness to help neighbors in need. And finally, this year is our 1st Annual PMI-MN PDD Speaker Reception in downtown St Paul. On Wednesday, September 14 the PDD team will host a casual meet-and-greet event with presenters and educators. Stop by after work or after class. We’ll provide the appetizers, you bring the conversation. A cash bar will be available.

In September we will be launching our Manufacturing and Quality PrC. This joint venture with the Minnesota section of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) will feature lively discussions and guest speakers. Our kickoff on September 19 will feature extra goodies for those who attend. Membership and registration are not required.

Lastly, don’t forget that we offer networking at every dinner meeting. New Member Orientation, Career Networking, and Practitioner Communities (PrC) are free and open to all from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. Our next event is Monday, August 15. Details for all of our events are available on the website.

Preparation day is Saturday, July 30 and Paint Day is Saturday, August 6 There is a more detailed overview of the PMBOK Guide - Sixth Edition Exposure Draft. You encouraged to make comments on the Front End and Knowledge Area Sections after logging in to PMI.org. The more input we have from you, the real practitioners, the better the PMBOK Guide will be.

Join Our Paint-A-Thon Team!

Each year since 1964 the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches has organized the Metro Paint-A-Thon to help low-income seniors and people with permanent physical disabilities live independently in their own homes longer. Each summer teams of volunteers paint home exteriors in Hennepin and Ramsey counties for those who are not able to do the maintenance themselves and cannot afford to hire a contractor. This service, offered at no cost to the homeowner, restores not only the homes we paint but also the homeowner’s sense of pride in their property and community.  Volunteers from PMI-Minnesota have been proud to participate in this event for more than 10 years.

If you like working in the outdoors, painting, volunteering for social good, or all of the above, join our PMI-MN team. Join Dan Hill, who will be leading our team effort this year, by sending your contact information to paintathon@pmi-mn.org.

Prep Day is on Saturday July 30 and Paint Day is Saturday August 6 (weather permitting).  We will be partnering again this year with Community United Methodist Church of Columbia Heights to repaint the trim, caulk windows, paint the garage, and stain a deck and wheelchair ramp on a house in northeast Minneapolis.  There is a lot of work to be done and we would love to have a small army of volunteers.  You don’t have to be an expert – just willing to help out a person in need in the community.
