Message from the President

Dear Members,
It’s Thanksgiving month. In that spirit, a big THANK YOU! To all our members, volunteers, partners, sponsors and friends – we would not be the organization we are today if it were not for you. We continue to be one of the largest and most innovative chapters in the world because of the inspiration, participation and feedback you have provided.
Thank you to our volunteers who make everything possible: Soliciting speakers, coordinating classes, breakfast, lunches and dinner meetings, webinars, special events, community services, volunteer training, student outreach for all ages (K-12, college undergrad and post-graduate), hundreds of website pages, newsletter content… An incredible array of services provided to our profession throughout Minnesota and North Dakota. Our volunteers put in more than 8000 hours each year!

Please consider nominating outstanding chapter volunteers for recognition. Just login to our web site, click on “Members Only” and select “Forms”, and open one of the volunteer recognition forms listed under “Nominations” near the bottom of the page. Throughout the year we celebrate our outstanding volunteers, and once a year we confer three special awards: Volunteer of the Year, Team of the Year, and Chapter Colleague. Please take a few moments of your valuable time to let someone know that they made a difference and nominate them for an award.

Our members recently elected four new representatives to the Board of Directors, and if you haven’t been introduced, please check out our web site. Janice Pyka will be moving into the Chair of Operations spot next year, taking over for Mohamed Diab, who moves to the President / CEO positon (and I move to the Past President / CoB role). Joe Perzel will be moving from Director At Large to Director of Finance. Manish Kalra and Sara (Lien) Swanson move onto the Board. Manish and Sara both come from our Operations team, and I want to thank them for recruiting and training their replacements. I also want to thank outgoing Board members Terri Kimball, Michelle Maas and Jerry Gomes for their service to date, and in advance for their continuing volunteer roles.

Just as onboarding activities are important at your place of employment, they are important to our volunteers. This year we were privileged to be able to offer a high level of volunteer participation in PMI’s Region 2 (R2) and Leadership Institute Meeting (LIM) training programs. This in addition to our annual transition sessions for volunteers. Some volunteers are new to a role, while others have valuable experience to share, and we strive to provide Opportunities For Excellence for all our volunteers. We are also busy filling open committee positions as current volunteers transition into new roles. If you are interested in volunteering for 2018, please contact chairvolunteers@pmi-mn.org, or visit the Join Us tab on our web site.

The upcoming holidays mark the end of the year and the transition to a new one. It is a time for reflection and planning. I have been privileged to work with an outstanding team of volunteers, drawn from a growing and vibrant membership. It has been a remarkable year, full of challenges, the excitement of change and personal growth. I hate to be redundant, but once again I have to say THANK YOU!

Chapter Transitional Meeting
by Janice Pyka, 2018 President Elect & COO

On Saturday, October 14th, the Chapter gathered together 28 key members from the Board, Operations and Committees to begin planning for 2018.  Mohamed Diab, 2018 Chapter President, kicked off the meeting by sharing highlights from our Membership Survey (see newsletter article for some of the highlights). Brain Cohn, MarComm Committee, facilitated our productive meeting, and we thank him for his thought provoking and engaging meeting.

The key question posed to all of us, “How can PMI-MN Chapter Committees better support each other?”

We have a strong & dynamic chapter, let’s build on our strength and support one another.  At the end of the day, each committee committed to key action items to help support, promote and gain momentum with our strong desire to continue to grow and build our team and Chapter.  >>Read More

2017 Ana Alvarez-Holmberg Scholarship

Congratulations Harry Azoh! Harry is the latest recipient awarded the Ana Alvarez-Holmberg Scholarship.  He was awarded the scholarship at a PMI-MN function on September 18 in Bloomington.

The scholarship was created as a living tribute to the memory of one of our great members and volunteers. Jointly sponsored by ATD-GTC (Association for Talent Development – Greater Twin Cities) and PMI-MN (the Minnesota Chapter of the Project Management Institute) as an annual scholarship, the award provides $2000 to the winning candidate. >>Read More
