Program Description

Have you ever successfully managed and delivered a project in the absence of set-backs and tough conversations? I didn’t think so. Addressing the sensitive issue of poor social skills of an otherwise technically savvy employee, reigning in a team member with dominant behavior, motivating someone who is not pulling his weight, or handling tensions between conflicting project members can all result in testing conversations that most of us dread.

The outcome of these conversations, however, depends greatly on how you handle the discussion: How you navigate interests, emotions, and fears of all parties involved, including yourself. You have to understand the difference between position and interest, the relationship between what a person does and fears, the impact of your own assumptions, how likes and dislikes influence the conversation, and many more dynamics.

In this session we discuss the impact of misguided beliefs and thinking ‘distortions’ on your handling of tough conversations as well as the impact of different communication styles on the outcome of challenging conversations. We will discuss Ofman’s Core Qualities model, ways to communicate transparently and clearly, as well as proven techniques to get to the core of the issue and diffuse tensions. You will leave this with practical insights and useful techniques that you can apply every day to a wide variety of tough conversations with the many different team members and stakeholders that you deal with.
