Program Description

It’s day one of a new project – you’re optimistic – new team and stakeholders – interesting project. Everyone is excited …at least that’s how many projects start. Yet something happens along the way…missed assumptions…unclear roles…hidden agendas…and suddenly that nirvana of a team is at each other’s throats. How do you handle this?

Navigating the people side of project management is an essential skill for any successful project manager. There aren’t magical answers to every dysfunctional situation you’ll face, but the smart PM has a variety of tools available to handle conflict, both personally and amongst team members.

This seminar will explore the critical elements of establishing your project team from a team development perspective. In addition, you’ll dive into your own style of handling conflict, with the assistance of an assessment called the Conflict Dynamics Profile. Learn both constructive and destructive tendencies you have in approaching conflict situations. Uncover what pushes your hot buttons.

We’ll work on skill building in conflict management and apply principles to real life situations. Mediating between team members in conflict will also be covered. We’ll use a variety of learning mechanisms: small group discussions, lecture, large group debriefs, and dyad practice. Each participant will receive a personalized printout of results from the Conflict Dynamics Profile, a 40 page development guide, and various tools you can take back to your work.
