Project management has been practiced for thousands of years. Modern project management was mainly used by industries like defense and construction. However, program/project management is now used in every industry and every country.
For many, project management is traditionally task-oriented management with the focus in technical skills. In today’s complex and competitive environment, technical skills alone are not enough for many industries such as healthcare where leadership is extremely crucial for its successes.
I believe this was recognized, hence, the move to the PMI Talent Triangle (Leadership, Strategic and Business Management, in addition to Technical Project Management).
We will discuss: (1) differences between management vs. leadership, (2) increasingly importance of leadership in running programs/projects and (3) leadership in strategic alignment (one of five key domains for Program Management/PgMP).

Richard Lu is in program/project management at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. Richard has spent more than 25 years in different roles in healthcare and the medical device industry including Medtronic and St. Jude Medical. He is American College of Healthcare Executives’ FACHE, Project Management Institute’s PgMP and PMP certified. He has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and three master’s degrees in biomedical engineering, business administration and international business.
